46 Years in Lynchburg: Charley’s Gets Ready to Celebrate

Forty-six years is a long time to be part of a community, and Charley’s Restaurant & Catering is getting ready to celebrate that milestone in Lynchburg.

The Lynchburg Charley’s opened in 1980. Since then, the restaurant has served generations of guests for everyday meals, family celebrations, business lunches, private gatherings, and catered events throughout Lynchburg and Central Virginia.

From 45 Years to 46

Our 45-year story on this site carried a simple title: “A Love Note in the Window: 45 Years of Lynchburg Meeting at Charley’s.” The moment behind it was just as simple. Someone wrote a little love note in the condensation at Charley’s, and it felt like the right symbol for a restaurant that has been part of Lynchburg since 1980.

That 45-year milestone is why we are sharing this image again as we move toward our 46th anniversary. It marks the milestone that brought us here and gives us a place to begin looking forward.

A Story That Started in 1980

After a career in professional baseball, Charley Sands opened the first Charley’s restaurant in Charlottesville in 1975. The Lynchburg location followed in 1980. Over the years, Charley’s grew beyond the dining room. In 2001, the restaurant established a full-service catering department serving meetings, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and community events throughout Lynchburg and Central Virginia.

Today, Charley’s Restaurant & Catering is locally owned and operated by Rob and MJ Pearson, continuing a local tradition that has been part of Lynchburg for decades.

What 46 Years Means

An anniversary like this is not only about the number. It is about the people who kept walking through the doors, the families who gathered around the tables, the employees who welcomed guests, and the community that gave a local restaurant the chance to become part of everyday meals and important celebrations.

We are grateful to have been part of Lynchburg’s story since 1980.

With our 46th anniversary ahead, we are beginning the celebration by looking back with gratitude. The 45-year image above is a reminder of the milestone we just crossed. Year 46 is an opportunity to keep doing what Charley’s has done for decades: welcome people in, serve them well, and be a place where Lynchburg gathers.
