A Love Note in the Window: 45 Years of Lynchburg Meeting at Charley’s

We didn’t put it there.

We just found it.

Last night, someone traced a simple message into the condensation on one of the windows at Charley’s Restaurant & Catering in Lynchburg, Virginia:

LYH ❤️ CHR

A few letters. A heart. And somehow, a pretty good summary of the last 45 years.

Sometimes the Little Things Say the Most

Restaurants are built around food, but the places that last become about something more.

They become the table where a family always sits. The place friends meet after work. The restaurant somebody remembers from childhood and later brings their own children to. The room where birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, rehearsal dinners, business lunches and ordinary Tuesday nights become part of somebody’s story.

That has been Charley’s relationship with Lynchburg since 1980.

And seeing those letters written casually into a foggy window felt like a tiny reminder of it.

CHR ❤️ LYH.

Charley’s loves Lynchburg.

And for more than four decades, Lynchburg has given a lot of love right back.

A Lynchburg Restaurant Since 1980

Charley’s Restaurant & Catering has been part of the Lynchburg dining community since 1980, serving generations of guests from Lynchburg, Forest, Timberlake, Madison Heights and communities throughout Central Virginia.

The location may be on Graves Mill Road, but the story of Charley’s stretches far beyond one address.

It lives in the people who have celebrated here.

It lives in longtime guests who recognize familiar faces when they walk through the door.

It lives in employees who have spent years… and sometimes decades… working alongside one another.

It lives in the weddings and events Charley’s has catered throughout Central Virginia.

And it lives in little moments like finding “LYH ❤️ CHR” written in the condensation after a night of serving our community.

What Does CHR ❤️ LYH Mean?

Around here, CHR ❤️ LYH is pretty simple:

Charley’s ❤️ Lynchburg.

LYH is a familiar shorthand for Lynchburg, Virginia, and CHR has become our own little shorthand for Charley’s.

Put them together and you get something we’ve been fortunate enough to experience for decades: a local restaurant and its hometown growing up together.

No corporate slogan needed.

Someone already wrote it on the window for us.

More Than a Place to Eat in Lynchburg

People searching for a restaurant in Lynchburg, VA have plenty of choices.

We know that.

So we have never taken it lightly when someone chooses Charley’s for lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch, a steak, seafood, a burger, live music, a family gathering, a private party or catering for one of life’s important occasions.

Those visits add up.

One meal becomes a tradition. One celebration becomes a memory. One first visit becomes, “This is our place.”

That’s how a restaurant stays around long enough for generations of Lynchburg to know its name.

Still Meeting at Charley’s

Forty-five years and counting is a lot of meals.

It is an even bigger collection of people.

That’s the part we’re proudest of.

Charley’s has changed over the years, just as Lynchburg has. But the reason people walk through our doors hasn’t changed much at all.

They come to eat. They come to celebrate. They come to catch up. They come to spend time together.

Lynchburg is still meeting at Charley’s.

And apparently, every now and then, Lynchburg leaves us a love note on the window, too.

CHR ❤️ LYH

45 years and counting.
